What Happens During Shahi Snan?

The Peshwai Procession
Before taking the holy dip, the Akhadas (monastic orders) lead a majestic procession called the Peshwai. Sadhus arrive on decorated elephants, horses, and golden chariots accompanied by brass bands and chanting.

The First Dip (Shahi Snan)
The Naga Sadhus (naked, ash-smeared ascetics) are given the privilege of taking the first dip. It is believed that their bathing spiritually 'charges' the water with divine energy.

After the Akhadas have completed their rituals and vacated the ghats, the general public is allowed to enter the water. Pilgrims offer prayers to their ancestors and the Sun God.
